Anthony Wayne Trail (Toledo/Maumee)
The Anthony Wayne Trail (US-42) is a controlled access highway that runs through suburban areas of Toledo. Ohio Revised Code “prima facie” speed limits establish roads like this with a default speed of 50 mph. The corridor sees about 70 crashes annually. Former Maumee Mayor Richard Carr called it a “racetrack from Maumee to Toledo.”
The suburb of Maumee is trying to bring a “small town feel” back to its commerical center. The city recently overhauled Conant Street which intersects with the Anthony Wayne Trail through its “Uptown District” and wants to install outdoor dining and give the area more of a destination feel for residents. But the 50 mph speed limit dictated by ORC, given that it is considered a “limited access highway,” is not conducive to comfortable dining and walking for customers. The city would like to lower the speed to 35 mph.
